Murder Ballad

I asked my love to take a walk,
To take a walk, just a little way
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio
(alternate last two lines of first verse:
An' as we walked, then we would talk
About our golden wedding day)
CH: And only say that you'll be mine;
And in no others' arms entwine.
Down beside where the waters flow,
Down by the banks of the Ohio.
I held a knife against her breast
As into my arms she pressed,
Cryin' "Oh Willie, don't you murder me,
I'm not prepared for eternity."
I took her by her pretty white hand,
I led her down to the water's strand.
I picked her up, I pitched her in,
I watched her as she floated down.
Returnin' home between twelve and one,
I cried "My God, what have I done?
I'd killed only woman I loved,
Because she would not be my bride."
The very next day, at half past four,
The sheriff walked right to my door;
He said, "Young man, come on let's go,
Down to the banks of the Ohio"
